Recombinant Plasmid

Use this interactive to keep the order of recombinant-plasmid formation clear, from gene isolation through ligation and transformation.

What This Diagram Does Not Show

  • This is a process map, not a literal molecular-scale drawing of recognition sequences, plasmid size, or the crowded chemistry inside a real cell.
  • The reverse-transcriptase route is included because cDNA is an alternative way to obtain the coding sequence, but the model still simplifies the detailed chemistry after reverse transcriptase, DNA polymerase and later restriction-endonuclease treatment.
  • The main sequence stops at transformation, so marker-gene screening and colony selection need to be added mentally afterwards.
